The primary function of an Airport Rescue Fire Service is the rescue of passengers and crew of aircraft involved in accidents occurring on and in the vicinity of an aerodrome.

The necessity for rapid and coordinated action in the event of an aerodrome emergency will usually require the closest cooperation between Air Traffic Services and ARFFS personnel and the frequent rehearsal of procedures. Details of special local procedures should be included in the Airport Emergency Plan.

Rescue fire service categories, equipment, services and hours of operation are found in Civil Aviation Rules (CAR) Part 139, the SI-AIP and Supplements.
