HONIARA, Solomon Islands: Construction of the Aviation Complex Building near Honiara International Airport, implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) with support from the World Bank is progressing steadily, with key milestones achieved in recent months.

Solomon Islands Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto, met with Fiji’s Minister for Information, Hon. Lynda Tabuya, on the sidelines of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara, Tuesday this week.

The Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Communication and Aviation in partnership with the Governments of Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand launched a Solomon Islands Computer Emergency Response Team (SICERT) project in collaborative efforts to combat cybersecurity threats in the country.

Officers of the Aviation Security Division of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation had successfully concluded an awareness recertification training on Dangerous Goods last month from September 3-10.

The construction phase of the Honiara International Airport expansion project is employing one hundred local workers alongside forty overseas supervisors.

The local workers will further benefit from skills and knowledge transfer from the ongoing collaboration with expat workers during and after the project, which will be a bonus for the country.

The Ministry of Communication and Aviation as part of its National ICT Week from the 17th to 18th May, facilitated a public forum aimed at raising awareness on the dark side of cyberspace.

The open forum was themed “The Growing ‘Dark Side of Cyberspace’ and What to do About It”.

The Governments of Solomon Islands and New Zealand have advanced plans to invest further in provincial airport upgrades after the completion of the Munda International Airport at the end of this year, in line with the Democratic Coalition for Change Government’s (DCCG’s) Reprioritisation Policy 4.2.2.5(g).
